INDEPENDENCE MONUMENT

centre of Sihanouk Blvd Phnom Penh

The iconic Independence Monument - an Angkorian-style tower which dominates the centre of Sihanouk Blvd - was built in 1958 to commemorate the country's independence from France. The 20-metre tall monument (Vimean Ekareach) is a symbol for the city and a memorial for Cambodian patriots who died for their country. This is the location of the city's Independence Day celebrations every year on November 9. A stretch of green leading from this towards the river also now features a new statue of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, which was unveiled in late 2013.
